Dissolved oxygen, the oxygen held in the water itself, runs out at the bottom first, the biology that keeps the water alive quits, and the trouble everyone can see follows at the surface. The dark layer along each floor is the same problem in every vessel: the water where dissolved oxygen runs out first.* ### The pond In a pond or a lake, the sediment holds every leaf and clipping that ever sank, and the bacteria digesting that material draw oxygen around the clock. When the bottom runs out, phosphorus, the nutrient that feeds algae, leaks back out of the mud, the bloom arrives at the surface, and the fish are gasping by dawn. ### The hatchery raceway A hatchery raceway or a grow-out pond holds more animals per gallon than any natural water, so it spends its oxygen faster than any natural water could. The bill comes due before sunrise, after a night of respiration with no photosynthesis to cover it, and a grower can lose a season in one quiet morning. ### The irrigation reservoir Roots drink whatever the reservoir gives them, and water that has been sitting in a tank goes flat, with little of the oxygen a root zone needs to breathe. Crops fed on spent water invite the rots that can cost a grower the season. ### The manure lagoon A manure lagoon is asked to digest a farm's whole load, and the digestion that runs on oxygen is quick and quiet while the airless kind is slow and sour. When the lagoon's bottom goes without, the load stops breaking down and starts building up, and the smell reaches the neighbors before the storage problem reaches the books. ### The wastewater reactor A treatment lagoon or reactor is biology hired to clean water on a deadline, and oxygen sets the pace of the work. When aeration cannot keep up, treatment slows while the inflow does not, and the effluent, the treated water leaving the plant, starts missing the numbers the permit is written in. ### One mechanism answers all five Nanobubble oxygenation makes bubbles too small to rise, so instead of bursting at the surface within seconds they stay suspended, carrying dissolved oxygen through the whole column and down to the sediment where the failure begins.
