# Broodstock oxygen: hold the breeders steady

Broodstock, the adult fish or shrimp a hatchery keeps for breeding, concentrate a season of value in a few tanks. Months of conditioning ride on stable water, and a low-oxygen night stresses the animals that can least afford it. ## What’s actually happening in your water

Broodstock, the adult fish or shrimp kept for breeding, are where a hatchery concentrates its value. A grow-out pond spreads risk across thousands of animals, but a broodstock program holds a season of production in a few tanks of large, carefully conditioned individuals, and everything scheduled behind them, from spawning to the fingerling orders, assumes they arrive at spawning in condition.

Large animals draw more dissolved oxygen (the oxygen held in the water itself), and broodstock are often held warm, for conditioning or maturation, in water that carries less oxygen precisely because it is warm. Through the night the animals and the bacteria breaking down waste keep drawing oxygen down while nothing replaces it, so the reading bottoms out before dawn, below anything the daytime check sees. An animal riding that marginal supply feeds less and carries more stress, and months of marginal nights accumulate quietly through conditioning until they surface at spawning, where they are hardest to diagnose and most expensive.

## Why the usual fixes don’t hold

Air stones and splash aeration lose most of their oxygen back to the air before it dissolves, so they hold a tank that was nearly fine anyway and fall behind on one that is not. They also work by agitating the surface, which is a cost of its own over animals whose stress you are trying to remove rather than add.

More water exchange is the other reflex, and it helps, but broodstock water is usually tempered, treated, or both, so every added liter of exchange costs heating and treatment and works against the stability the conditioning program is built on.

## What to expect, and when

## When this isn't the right fix

- Broodstock conditioning is driven by nutrition, genetics, temperature, and photoperiod, the light schedule that cues maturation. Oxygen removes a stressor from that program; it does not substitute for any of those drivers, and a spawning problem rooted in them needs them addressed.
- Many broodstock rooms already run pure-oxygen injection, and where it holds the tanks steady through the night, it is doing the job. Our case is efficient oxygen held continuously in the water, and the assessment compares it against what you run rather than assuming you need more.
- If the real stressor is ammonia or nitrite, the waste chemistry of a recirculating system, oxygenation supports the bacteria that process them but will not fix an undersized or struggling biofilter on its own, and the assessment will say so.

## Questions people ask

**How much oxygen do broodstock need?**

Demand scales with body size, feeding, and temperature, and broodstock are the largest animals on the site, often held in the warmest water. The safer question is whether dissolved oxygen holds a steady margin above what the species needs through the whole night, and the measured overnight curve answers that where a daytime spot check cannot.

**Why does oxygen drop at night in broodstock tanks?**

The animals keep breathing after dark, and so do the bacteria breaking down waste, while nothing is producing oxygen to replace what they take. The reading falls through the night and reaches its lowest point just before dawn, which is why the trough rarely shows up in a check made during working hours.

**Does low oxygen affect spawning and egg quality?**

Oxygen is one input among several. An animal riding a marginal oxygen supply feeds less and carries more stress, and months of that accumulate through conditioning where they can surface at spawning. Holding oxygen steady removes that stressor from the program, while nutrition, temperature, and photoperiod still do the governing.

**Does this apply to shrimp broodstock maturation tanks?**

Yes. Maturation tanks run warm, and warm water holds less oxygen at exactly the time the animals demand more of it. The same continuous approach holds the margin steady, and because the tanks are few and the animals valuable, the overnight log earns its keep quickly.

**We already run air stones. Why change anything?**

In a lightly loaded tank with good exchange, air stones and flow may already hold the night steady, and the baseline will show it. Nanobubbles transfer more of the oxygen you pay for into the water and hold it through the column, so where the log shows the trough dipping, they lift it without more surface agitation over sensitive animals.
