On a summer afternoon a pond looks its best at the exact hour its oxygen peaks, and everything that happens next happens in the dark. Follow one night down the water column, and watch where the oxygen goes.

The pond spends its oxygen all night

Dissolved oxygen, the oxygen held in the water itself, is the pond's whole budget for the night. By day, algae and plants put oxygen in faster than the pond breathes it out; after sunset the photosynthesis stops, and every fish, insect, and bacterium keeps drawing the account down. A summer pond also stratifies, which means the warm surface layer floats on the colder deep water and the two stop mixing, so the deep water is cut off from the air while the shortage builds along the bottom.

The crash comes just before dawn

Oxygen falls all night and bottoms out in the last dark hour, when nothing has put any back since sunset. The fish leave the deep water and crowd the surface where the last of it is, and one still, cloudy morning can take a pond's fish in a night. The dark layer that gathers along the floor is the oxygen debt, the water that runs short first.

The breath goes back in

Nanobubble oxygenation makes bubbles too small to rise, so instead of bursting at the surface within seconds they stay suspended, carrying oxygen through the whole column and down to the sediment where the shortage starts. The debt recedes, the water clears, and the fish come back down into open water.

The morning held

With oxygen carried the full depth around the clock, the pre-dawn low never reaches the level that stresses the fish, the floor keeps its oxygen so the muck and the blooms it feeds lose their engine, and the pond stops living night to night.

The mechanism on this water

Nearly everything a pond owner calls about, the algae, the muck, the smell, the fish gasping at the surface, traces back to the same shortage: the deep water and the sediment run out of oxygen. A summer pond stratifies, meaning the warm surface layer floats on the colder deep water and the two stop mixing, so the bottom is cut off from the air for months. Starved of oxygen, the sediment turns anaerobic, builds muck, releases the smell, and feeds the nutrients back up into the next algae bloom.

Nanobubble oxygenation, oxygen in bubbles small enough to stay suspended instead of rising and bursting, carries dissolved oxygen through the whole column and down to the sediment, and adds nothing else, so the pond's own biology does the recovery.
